A Brief Observation on “Demons” and Paranormal Pursuits

Colleagues in the paranormal field talk of being personally singled out and attacked by “demons” as of late and it has been a topic of major discussion in paranormal circles.

Surprise! This happens. Many paranormal investigators have felt that they were being attacked.

Are they demons? Hell no.

Was that pun intended? Hell yes.

Because this is an area of great concern for many people: paranormal investigators, Christians, and ghost boxers alike; I felt now would be a great time to write about “demons” and the paranormal. This is my opinion based upon a lifetime of paranormal study and several years of active paranormal practice.

As I have written before, you can be attacked if you leave yourself open to it. It happened to me years ago on an investigation and I wrote about it in my protection article in early 2011. Anyone who practices in this field needs to know that there is more than we can see with the eye. Attacks happen, albeit rarely.

So what does a demonic attack consist of?

Most people think an invisible demon rends you with their claws and makes you sick to your stomach with horrible smells. They haunt your dreams. They make your life a living hell. Blood will drip from the walls and you may be thrown across the room. Split pea soup may be involved.

Worse yet – they are everywhere and if you use a ghost box you will become a demon’s play toy. Same goes with Ouija Boards.

BEWARE (of sarcasm)!

In my experience, these clichés couldn’t be further from the truth. I’ll explain why later in the article, but first we must figure out:

Why do people think this?

You can thank Hollywood. Movies and ghost hunting television shows will have you believe that demons are around every corner in a haunted location. People write books proclaiming demons were in a house because of an EVP with a swear word in it or they heard an entity knocking on the wall at night. Everyone in this field has a horror story – usually nothing more than embellishment – and most will invariably try to sell their story for money and popularity.

Nothing pisses me off more as an investigator and ardent researcher of the paranormal.

To be blunt, there is absolutely no proof of demons gained by any paranormal investigator to this point in time. What has been collected is evidence of paranormal activity, some of which can be considered a nuisance, and on exceptionally rare occasions, malevolent. Modern paranormal investigators would have you believe that there is a demon every other house they investigate – especially if they are on a TV show or are trying to sell themselves as victims in order to get on a TV show.

This is the selling of fear. It’s what the public wants and because the public wants it, the selling of fear makes money. People want to be scared. That is how the ghost of a grandparent who wants to get a client’s attention turns into an infestation at the whim of Beelzebub himself.

To make matters worse, every paranormal group seems to have someone who is a self-proclaimed demonologist who is trained for such situations. In case you were wondering, you too can learn to be a demonologist online, certification and all, for a low low price and a few hours of your time. Then you can assure your clients that you can remove every persistent demon from their property (often for a price).

What people don’t realize is that the majority of demons are simply tricksters for lack of a better term.

Trickster Spirits

The Trickster spirit has been a part of every cultural mythos for recorded history. While a Trickster spirit is not a single metaphorical entity or god, the Trickster spirit is more like human nature made manifest.

Paranormal investigation becomes something entirely different when you are working with live, real time, two-way communication with the other side. As often written on this site and in my articles, we do not know with whom, or what we are communicating. Undeniably the majority of our communications are with former humans who were living flesh at one time. We do know that we are communicating with a conscious intent and that is the most important thing.

With consciousness comes intent. When you are communicating, you do not know the alignment of the consciousness you are communicating with. Average citizens are on the other side, as are priests, murderers, pedophiles and psychopaths. You never know who you are communicating with. Some of the ITC Voices are harmonic and vibrating at a much higher rate. Some are Techs. Some are, to be blunt once again, assholes. As in life, so too in death.

It is these asshole spirits that like to play at being demons. We often liken these spirits to being of low-vibration. They are in a place of confusion and darkness. Some have bypassed the light, others have absolutely no interest in the light. They revel in their dark character.

These are your demons. They like to swear, make threats and play at being demons or other evil entities. I get these voices all the time – we all do. Those who are closest to us on the other side of the veil are these low-vibration spirits. They haven’t moved on and they are closest in form to how they were in the physical world. For most spirit communicators, these are the voices that are picked up when you turn a box on. Until you have a trusted spirit group you work with, this is what you can expect.

This is why you search ghost box videos on YouTube and invariably you will turn up the word “demon” in the title. It is pure ignorance to think these things are demons.

Think about it. The spirit world is around you at all times. Unless you are exceptionally gifted, you cannot see it and you cannot hear it. But it is there, always. Yet the pervasive myth is that if you talk to this world, you will unleash the hounds of hell and you will invariably get attacked. Yet billions of people go through life every day not communicating with the spirit realm and they are just fine. Yet there are those that teach that once you open up a line of communication, usually with low-vibration entities, all of a sudden you are “marked” and hell awaits.

If you are communicating with low-vibration entities, what else would you expect to come through boxes? The ghosts of puppy dogs and unicorns? No. You get what your spirit group allows for. I have spent years working with specific spirits and I attract mainly good communications as a result. For years I would not tolerate swearing through a box, I would threaten to turn the box off if it continued. That closes the door, communication kaput! No spirit wants that. They want to interact with the physical world, especially those who are earthbound and of good intent.

And there are those that want to mess with your head.

It has been demonstrated time and again that thoughts can be read by the other side. Questions answered before they are asked. It has also been shown that they observe you at all times as they often comment on something you did earlier in the day, week or month.

So it only goes to show that if you dwell upon the negative or demons, you will get that type of communication. The communication originates from some low-level entity that just wants to mess with your head. Demon. Satan. Lucifer – these are all Christian trigger words. These words get an emotional rise out of people and they scare. As a ghost boxer, one has to realize that these things are simply meant to scare because like humans, everyone likes a fright. Some people like to dish out fright, invisible bullies.

No one has ever been possessed from using a ghost box. No one has ever had to endure physical attacks resulting in harm during a session.

But there are psychical attacks; and no, they are not demonic.

Psychical Attacks

A psychical attack is rather unpleasant. When you are attacked you can feel pain in your chest, sudden migraine, an upset stomach, narrowing of vision, disorientation or a feeling of not being yourself.

Most everyone who is an active investigator with experience will encounter this at a location from time to time. On rare occasions, as I wrote in my protection article, a brief attachment can happen. I’ve had it happen and it sucks, but ultimately, we are all boring humans doing boring human things and an attachment will leave in short order.

But a psychical attack isn’t always an evil entity. As mentioned earlier, if demons and negativity are in your thought circle, you may perceive a psychical attack as an evil thing.

There is another way to look at these attacks. If you are at a purportedly haunted location and investigators come and go all the time, you are dealing with entities that are familiar with the antics of ghost hunters.

Many spirit seek help from us, others are looking to communicate. Sometimes a psychical attack is simply an entity trying to communicate at a location. You can’t always hear their words, so they try to impress upon you emotion. Those who can read this emotion are called empaths. I believe that many of the psychical attacks we endure are simply the result of a benign spirit trying to communicate with us.

Yes, protection does helps a bit. Grounding yourself in light strengthens your resilience against such attacks. If you find you’re having these attacks frequently, learn from someone how to refine your perceptions so you can become more attuned to the intent of the communication. Use your senses, not your equipment. Learn to protect yourself.

Finally, no – there aren’t demons on every hunt and don’t let anyone try to tell you there are. And those voices you may get through an EVP or a ghost box recording? They aren’t demons either.

No one has ever captured a demons voice, or a demon on film. Outside of the Bible, we have no solid evidence that demons even exist outside of a few bad cases of possible attachment. These do exist, and they are exceptionally rare.

When you think about it, can you name a single case of demonic possession that can be proven to be demonic? And why do only those who are religious get possessed (never an atheist)…food for thought.

Psychical attacks suck and the first time you really experience one you may think only a demon could make you feel so vile. But think outside the lines a bit and realize that not all communication is audio or video, some is emotional and that is the source of psychical attacks. So for now, continue ghost boxing and take from this article what you will.

Great article Tim and I concur with you 100%. I’ve looked at some stories where people say they were attacked when they became physically ill (getting sick, headaches, etc) and wondered if in fact these were not intentional attacks, but rather the investigator being over sensitive to the energy of the spirit trying to communicate with it. Since different spirits have different energy levels, it would be easy to see where an investigator can get sick to their stomach in the presence of a high energy spirit.

I myself have felt a sense of high fear a couple of times while communicating, but I attributed that to a high EMF output by the spirit that I reacted to. The communication was completely benevolent, no foul language or threats or the red flag words “Satan, Devil, Demon”. The spirits were not intentionally trying to attack me, just my reaction to their energy. Most times when I communicate, I feel nothing.

Also, one has to consider the possible context in which words like demon or devil are used. At an old farmhouse I was investigating (built in 1827), I caught a Class A EVP from a male spirit that said “Devil”. So of course I was told I should take that as a warning that there was a Devil on the grounds and I shouldn’t go back there. At an event a few years ago, I asked Dave Schrader about something like that and he said I should consider the more likely possibility that the spirit was calling me a “Devil” for being on their property. Maybe the spirit does not think it is dead and thinks I am the ghost. For a person from the 1800’s, the mentality might have been that all ghosts are devils. Just like some very devout Christians from today try to warn me on a regular basis that I am not dealing with human spirits, but rather demons and devils.

    Great article again!

You make very good points that serious researchers need to remember when investigating: Know the history and thus, the “context” by which Spirits will communicate. They are completely in their own time (when they transitioned); words they use will have entirely different meaning to them than to us. Also, many in the 19th century did not have the benefit of any schooling, or maybe only to a third grade level (then had to go make a living in the fields). People use Ovilus devices and get “DEMON” all the time; later investigating the same area over time, they discover the Spirit is just saying “DEMAND” – they are still a bit negative by demanding anything, but they are hardly Demons and you are Trespassing, usually, on their property! And yes, I agree that our Reality is Ours; their Reality is Theirs (which is “REAL”?). They may indeed believe they are Alive (in their world they actually FEEL SOLID TO EACH OTHER – as we NDE survivors discover) and they believe YOU are the DEMONS/GHOSTS. We must always remember that these Spirits are PEOPLE. If we remember this, we will treat them accordingly. And, it’s one of the reasons I don’t like so-called Demonologists, Ghost Tours, etc. I wouldn’t want anyone treating me the way many ghost investigators treat the so-called Dead, when I have passed. I’d be making trouble, too!

I was recently called a sinner for contacting familiar spirits, according to a Christian person in my life. Well, so be it, if thats what she wants to think. We are all sinners, and we all sin differently. Yet Ive always found a large segment of Christians unreasonably afraid of leaving their own brand of darkness. In old times, women who knew how to use herbs medicinally, were called witches and burned at the stake. As I am big into herbal medicine, and have witnessed it work wonders in the health of loved ones… I suppose I ought to be burned at the stake as well… and probably would have been, had I been born in a previous century. Television as well is considered a devils instrument by some Christians… and last but not least, tuning through a radio dial too quickly with the intent of communicating with disembodied consciousness…. is also the devils work now, huh? Yes, because Gods sadistic mission is to keep human beings in the dark, and reliant on blind faith for their entire tortured existence… How come we never hear Christians admitting the miracles they have witnessed? Come on, speak up. I know there are many of you out there. They’re they too afraid to do so because they think people will call them crazy, or necromancers? Things that defy the laws of physics happen everyday all over the planet, and from my own perspective as someone who does believe in God… they are Gods way of letting Gods existence be known. We are not meant to have to carry out our lives in irrational blind faith. We have been lied to, manipulated, gaslighted, and made to doubt our own senses, and I for one am beyond tired of it. Im exhausted by all these rules, Tim. If there was a recipe for a righteous life, I would have been born with a manual in my hand. And most of the world clearly has other gods before him, namely the almighty dollar. Id say that one demon wreaks more havoc in the world than any I could imagine.

Seeker, makes very good points. I believe that a “Closed Mind is a Secure Mind” (don’t remember who said this quote originally). Fear runs so many peoples’ lives. But I did learn, as an NDE survivor that there is no need for Organized Religion, unless it is to help those who are still trying to “progress Spiritually” in their own way on their own journey. Many are not yet ready to handle the “trauma” of finding out that the Life Source (God we can call “IT”) leaves us with The Golden Rule; it is up to us alone to continually try to better ourselves and rejoin with our Higher Selves, to eventually arrive at the Source, in time (different for every Soul). Even the Dark entities are further from the Source, but they are never permanently separated from it. We will Judge Ourselves when we transition, and we will turn away from communities of nicer folks, and turn toward communities to join in the other Dimensions/Spaces where we are with “like minds” until we seek to truly change internally, and not for selfish reasons, and ask to rejoin into Higher Self groups. The super religious, are not generally bad people however, they are just afraid to be responsible for their own actions and lives (they are newbie Souls, Spiritual children that we can feel some concern for, but must ultimately ignore if they don’t want to Open up their minds; expand their thoughts and possibilities – they are not ready yet). When they die (physically) what their BELIEFS are determine their temporary or very long term place in a community (there are actually churches, mosques, etc. created for and by these peoples’ thoughts when they arrive, and by others before them that greet them. Yes, tragically there will be ISIS groups in their own Space/dimension carrying out their Belief System that follows them into spirit life. THOUGHTS/telepathy, etc. IS THE WORLD OF SPIRIT – they are creating all the time (good, bad and evil as we all as a community CREATE our co-existence here). We go where we FIT; our THOUGHTS are so very, very important at Death. Which is why NDE folks are trying to get the word out that you will determine where you end up if you don’t live as selflessly as possible and with as much love and kindness as possible, but of course, not give it to unworthy souls (evil folks) that would abuse you. Our lives are very important, they will determine our After LIFE and how far and fast we can progress to other Consciousness plains of existence that are truly beautiful places to be and learn.

      • Seeker says:

Exactly, people are afraid to be responsiblr for their own actions, because then not just the successes but also the failures must be truly owned by them. So theyd rather remain secure in the dogma passed down by others. I as well do not believe it is necessary to lead an ascetic life that denies the flesh, so to speak. You cannot grow spiritually without a full experience of the spectrum of light and darkness. God gave us free will, and I too believe it is through this self directed journey we make our way back to god, we cant do it alone, god fills in the gap, its called grace, but this doesnt excuse us from giving it our best effort. And this same Christian that called me a sinner also admits we are all sinners by simple virtue of being born into this flesh material world, and grace is the saving element. I tend to think the same way, even if not through the dogmatic lens she uses. Come here, experience life in the flesh, do your best to observe the golden rule and not harm others along the way, but gosh darn, do what you were born here to do, which is to live your life fully, not always in fear of demons, bogeymen, etc etc. Life in constant fear is no life at all.

      Seeker,
If you are interested: On Amazon there is a Kindle list (cheaper that the books) of Emanuel Swedenborg (18th century) who was ahead of his time as I likely NDE survivor from childhood, and later mystic, Astral Projector on a regular basis to these other Communities I spoke about in another post of mine. Here is a quote from his Heaven and Hell book:
“Some people believe it is hard to lead the heaven-bound life that is called ‘spiritual’ because they have heard that we need to renounce the world and give up the desires attributed to the body and the flesh and ‘live spiritually.’ All they understand by this is spurning worldly interests, especially concerns for money and prestige, going around in constant devout meditation about God, salvation, and eternal life, devoting their lives to prayer, and reading the Word and religious literature. They think this is renouncing the world and living for the spirit and not for the flesh. However, the actual case is quite different, as I have learned from an abundant experience and conversation with angels. In fact, people who renounce the world and live for the spirit in this fashion take on a mournful life for themselves, a life that is not open to heavenly joy, since our life does remain with us [after death]. No, if we would accept heaven’s life, we need by all means to live in the world and to participate in its duties and affairs. In this way, we accept a spiritual life by means of our moral and civic life; and there is no other way a spiritual life can be formed within us, no other way our spirits can be prepared for heaven. This is because living an inner life and not an outer life at the same time is like living in a house that has no foundation, that gradually either settles or develops gaping cracks or totters until it collapses.”
When he speaks of Heaven or Hell in his books, keep in mind that he still “interprets” from his own 18th century culture what he sees, as NDE folks today also do and that he is still giving accurate descriptions (in his series of books) of what the communities or Spaces that Spirits create with their Beliefs/Thoughts look like Heaven or Hellish existtences, not the actual places as the Bible is trying to explain; Heaven and Hell are different for every individual that exist in these Communities they go to, temporarily. Anyone who is trying to expand beyond Organized Religion needs to read the Emanuel Swedenborg books to launch you to a new perspective, with the caveat that you still make up your own mind and belief system as you read things by others.

  3. Renee says:

Very good article. I would agree with what you say. My first husband was a sociopath; when he becomes Spirit, believe me, he will be still bullying/terrorizing folks by saying “I am a Demon” on your Ovilus device or recorder. They lived in your culture and they will use your culture against you, to scare you. However, I will also say that physics may be proving other “worlds”, dimensions where other “creatures”/non-human, can exist and possibly enter our world. Perhaps some medieval paintings of “demons”, etc. were based on seeing, for a few seconds, some of these creatures from the dimensions that exist all around us. Perhaps, the Sasquatch, for example, is just perceiving for a moment a Neanderthal from the past, still existing in his non-linear time space that at times we can perceive while relaxed on a forest hike? Who knows. But the world is stranger and can be more dangerous than what we may want to believe.
